The Activities Program

The Activities Program to date has provided semester-end field trips for our mentees: a walking tour of the Historic District, an Albuquerque Isotopes baseball game, UNM basketball at The Pit, an outing at the Wild Rivers scenic area, and a clean-up of Pot Creek have been recent examples.

The program will be fully implemented in 2010 when we pilot a summer program for our mentees. Employing a day-camp format, mentees will enjoy sports and wilderness activities promoting fitness, social skills, and quite a bit of fun. The program will include an educational component and feature field trips to destinations such as museums, parks, universities and the state Capitol. Completing the intergenerational loop, we intend to utilize high school and UNM students as intern-counselors.

The Nonviolent Sports Initiative is already in process in partnership with the Taos Municipal School district. MEN has rewritten the school Athletic Handbook to underscore sports as a vehicle for positive personal development and preparation for life after graduation. MEN will develop a simple training package to promote nonviolent sportsmanship as well as enhanced performance and self-control. Trainings will be grade-level appropriate, and will be given to parents as well as coaches and players.
